Operation Supplement Safety - Dr. Patty Duester and Andrea Lindsey
Dietary Supplements are products we have likely all encountered at some point in our lives. It is an industry with over 50,000 different types of products and one that has surpassed over $40 billion dollars in revenue. It is also an industry with some regulation issues and therefore brings about some inherent health risks to using these products. Knowing that risk exists, it is important to make informed decisions when purchasing and taking any dietary supplements. In this episode, we will talk Dr. Patty Duester and Andrea Lindsey from Operation Supplement Safety (OSS), a group that is helping others make those informed decisions.
While OSS has resources available for all, their specific focus is on dietary supplement use within the Department of Defense. In January 2012, the Assistant Secretary for Health Affairs requested a DoD-wide educational campaign on dietary supplements. In response to this request, the DoD Dietary Supplement Subcommittee (DSSC), the U.S. Army Public Health Command, and the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) began developing a DoD-wide educational campaign—Operation Supplement Safety, or OPSS—to increase awareness within the DoD community about potential health risks and how to choose safe dietary supplements.
OPSS’s mission is to provide the best evidence-based information about dietary supplements to Military Service Members, their families, healthcare providers, and leaders to achieve human performance optimization. Since many Military Service Members use dietary supplements-for promoting health, improving performance, bodybuilding, losing weight, and more-their goal is to provide the tools and resources to help users make informed decisions about dietary supplements to reduce the potential risks to their health and careers.
